Re: Logmein and Linux

Is linux support not a little late?

Good news is that I work for a company that has a contract for hundreds (thousands? I never bothered to count but its huge) of pay per use kiosks across the US and Canada. The owner does not care what I use as long as its easy and it works. (not a geek) Gonna talk with te*mviewer or somebody else and see if we can get a contract for cheaper or the same price. If we can we will be switching.

I can't stand companys that ignore linux and free software.

I can push a new image to every one. Some are gonna fail and it will be a little bit of a pain getting the crew adjusted to te*mviewer but totally worth it. We use 3 different remote applications right now as I never bothered to clean things up. Why should I have to switch applications to log into our servers if we are paying you? Its not that much of a pain but its just the idea that logmein is too big to care about the other guy. Te*mviewer and others do it all with linux. Only reason we use logmein is it was there before I arrived.

FIX IT NOW! SUPPORT US! logmein... or don't. I will make the time and effort to change where our money goes and I hope the rest of you do to.

Sure there is vnc and other free alternatives but they lack the support, simplicity, and bells and whistles that logmein and other paid providers offer. Its time anyways to get all these machines cleaned up and I will be happy if we can find a way to NOT make logmein a part of it.

Why am I so mad? Its the amount of unnessary work I am going to have to go through to change everything over because I believe in the little guy, linux, and free software. Heck we pay redhat so its not really that free anyways.

Why don't I email logmein directly and ask them for linux support or let them know my issue and ask them to fix it before switching? I should not have to, they know its just not important to them. It proves that they don't care about us, its all about there money.

Is it not stupid that we have to force you to listen with our bank accounts? Linux flavors are not a passing fad. I love logmein as its so simple we can teach a 5 year old to use it. To bad they don't support linux.

The next book I type out is an email to the owner.

Oh and I saved a copy of this. Please don't remove it from your fourms.

Re: Logmein and Linux

Please get a linux version going.  My company and many customers us Win XP and 7 and need our help.  All us folks how help are linux users for the vast security issues of Windows.  I CAN NOT use Windows, so Linux is it.  With out a logmein Linux version, I am dependant on a VM Windows wich still scares me.

Please help.

Re: Logmein and Linux

I've been using Hamachi (both before it was logmein and after logmein acquired it) to access my linux machines remotely for years.

If you prefer also being able to control the desktop like logmein lets you do, just install nxserver on the computer you want to access and nxclient on the computer you're connecting from.  Make sure hamachi is on both computers and joined to the same network and you're good to go.

This has worked for me for well over 7 years... there's no reason anyone should be asking for something that's free and has been available for a LONG time.

Re: Logmein and Linux

Hey failfail,

i work with almost 200 remotely deployed systems. We manage without Logmein... I know it would be great to have them on board. You are looking for a cheaper solution.

You should drop me a line, I may be able to help... I have a nice solution that may work for you too.

All open source and thus free.... Secure too.

info at ecns dot ca

Thanks

Re: Logmein and Linux

It nice to see people are using Linux. The more it is used the more viable alternatives become for the home user community. However, lets be a little more realistic.

In as much as Logmein is a great, easy tool for remote desktop connection over the internet, Logmein is not an open source, community driven venture. For the most part, I would imagine they have far more "Free" users than paying customers. I understand their approach in this regard, but maybe some others do not or maybe they do and they remain quiet.

As an simple example, Ubuntu users, including myself, are largely using Ubuntu and other similar flavors of linux, free of charge and opt not to pay for long term support for the software. It is the same for Free Logmein Users. There is really no incentive for them to address this type of request as I imagine  it does not truly benefit them in the least to cater to less than 5% of the global computer user market.

There is support for Mac which I beleive is now baded on Linux rather than Unix, but it enjoys a much larger market share of paying customers and developers.

Re: Logmein and Linux

I have to disagree with those who disagree with a Linux version. :smileywink:

I work for a large company as well as running my own servers and desktops for various reasons.  I also, as most techy people do, support a lot of family and friends.  It's where those two situations overlap that makes not having a Linux solution a pain.  My company uses LogMeIn and pays quite a lot for many licenses.  I personally have to use LogMeIn for work and I have to use other solutions for the various other situations I have that are Linux based.  Since there are a number of us at my company who are in a similar situation, we are in the process of convincing the company to go to something that is easier on us, especially since the company is also moving in the direction of using Linux.  As a result, LogMeIn stands to lose us as a customer.

Currently it looks like we are going to move to TeamViewer, but it's a solution we like less than LogMeIn.

LogMeIn should absolutely support Linux.  For those thinking Linux is a small share of the market and not worth it, think about how long Linux has been out there and, while progess has been slow, it has progressed!  With ever rising licensing fees for operating systems, especially on the server front, more and more companies are looking at Linux.  My company has been a Windows shop for many years and is starting to move in the Linux direction, even on the desktop.  You may argue that it's the server side that is growing and there is no GUI on the server but you would be wrong.  With the ever increasing power of machines, we've installed GUI on all of our servers to make them easier to maintain.

I am downloading the command line tools LogMeIn has created so I'm going to play with that for a bit, but I still want GUI access.  I know there are tools like nxserver, using ssh -X, etc. but all of those require opening a hole in the firewall.  The nice thing about LogMeIn is not having to do that.  (In fact, my company will not allow a hole to be opened or I wouldn't be writing this.)  Even if LogMeIn supported the X11 protocal so we could just tunnel through their site and access our servers, that would be useful. :-)

Thanks!

Re: Logmein and Linux

Add my name to the list of those who are wanting Linux support for LogMeIn.  I just made the leap from Windows to Linux, and don't fancy the task of finding an alternative to the find standard LogMeIn has set!
